Jugalbandi in Austin - November 3rd, 2000
Held at the house of Mr. and Mrs. Barada Sarma,

and organized by Sushanta Parikh, these house concerts are a traditional musical activity in India and have been transplanted very successfully to Austin, Texas, USA. Typically we see a smaller audience so such gatherings are more intimate and the artists tend to take more musical risks than when they are performing for large crowds. The wonderful result is that one generally hears more innovation, and freshness.
This concert was no exception and starred the following AAA grade artists:
Partho Sarathy
Partho Sarathy is one of the most outstanding sarod players of India. Born
in Calcutta, he had his initial training on the sarod from his father, a
disciple of the famed Pandit Radhika Mohan Maitra. Partho made his concert
debut at the age of 10 and pursued his
training under Ustad Dhyanesh Khan, son of the legendary Ustad Ali Akbar
Khan. In 1976, Partho won the first prize in the All India Radio competition
for instrumental music. From 1980 onwards, Partho has received rigorous
training from the world renowned sitar Maestro, Pandit Ravi Shankar, with
whom he lived and learned in the true Guru Sishya parampara style. Partho
has been an active performer, both in India and abroad. He has played in
major festivals in India, including the Dover Lane Festival, and worldwide.
He has also accompanied his guru, Pandit Ravi Shankar in concerts all over
the world, including major concert halls such as The Royal Albert Hall, the
Royal Festival Hall and the Kremlin.
Partho has taken great care to maintain the pure styles of the beenkar and
rababia gharanas. His music shows an extraordinary richness and spiritual
depth with remarkable rhythmic accuracy. As an outstanding sarod player of
the new generation, Partho's musical talents are receiving accolades
internationally.
